Insurance companies, agents and adjusters are in business to make money, and may discourage you from filing a damage claim. Your insurance company may also provide you with a list of insurance company approved contractors.

Approved contractors typically agree to cost cutting measures designed to save them money, often at your expense. This reduces the amount of money your insurance company has to pay out on your claim, but can also mean lower quality for you. Protect yourself by getting least three estimates from reputable contractors not referred by your insurance company. Get each bid in writing and make sure you have a good understanding of what each contractor is offering.

When it comes time to select a contractor to perform repairs, be wary of contractors who work door-to-door. Make sure any contractor you do business with is properly licensed, insured and is trained to install materials in your state. Ask for references, including the contractor's last three completed jobs. Drive by the job site and speak with homeowners. This will give you a good idea of the service you will receive from the contractor.
